PSFreedom for iPhone and iPod Released

But! Before you jump the gun you should know that this is considered a test release or an “early preview.” It’s not as straightforward as you’d hope. You need OpeniBoot installed and your iPhone must be a 2G or 3G model; iPod Touch 1G works too. Included are the sources that you must compile yourself for the iPhone; a binary is included for the iPod Touch. Because of its current state I’ll ask you visit the PSFreedom PSFreedom iPhoneLinux wiki page
From the README:

Just a small testing release of PSFreedom for iPhoneLinux.
A precompiled kernel/initrd is in the iPT1G folder, the USB kernel
patch is in the PSFreedom/iphone folder. It should be applied to
kernel_common from the iDroid-Project user on github as detailed on
the idroidproject.org web site.

The android.img.gz is the initrd plus a testing boot script, the
.ko should go in /lib in it.

To build PSF, use ‘make clean && make iphone’ from the PSFreedom
folder as usual.

At the time, Backup Manager isn’t working (and no, it’s not due to
the /dev_bdvd patch), but I’m working on fixing that.

Don’t expect too many support, as this is just an ‘early’ preview.

Booting the initrd will work by using the ‘Android’ menu option in
OpeniBoot. Once the screen starts filling up with ‘INIT’ you can do
the starting as usual with ‘jailbreak’ devices. Note that the iPhone
should be the only device plugged in the PS3′s USB ports.

– NTAuthority (2010-09-10)
It’s progress all right. Sooner or later the whole process will be simplified — you can count on that. Be patient — don’t update to 3.42. Good lookin’ NTAuthority. Props.

Update: Here is a very well written tutorial to help get you started with OpeniBoot and Android on your iPhone.
Update: We’ve added the compiled binaries for iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G. We’ve also mirrored NTAuthority’s version for the iPod Touch.
Tutorials? Sure. Click here for iPod Touch and here for iPhone.

PSFreedom – Hack your PS3 using a Nokia N900!

Ok, I’m not 100% sure on this because I don’t have, nor do I know anyone who has a Nokia N900. This apparently isn’t a direct port of PSGroove either; it’s KaKaRoTo’s own implementation of the same USB Hub-emulating exploit. Does it work? I’m hoping someone reading this has a N900 and can confirm. If that’s you, try this:

1. Download psfreedom.tar.gz, extract it, and copy the files to your N900 into /root.
2. To enable, type: ./psfreedom-enable.sh
3. Unplug or switch off your PS3 completely killing the power.
4. Connect your N900 to your PS3 via USB.
5. Boot your PS3 using the power button quickly followed by pressing the eject button.
6. Now you should see Package Manager in the XMB allowing you to install and run unsigned code.
7. To disable and return your N900 to normal, type: ./psfreedom-disable.sh

Some video to back it up:

KaKaRoTo, props. Nice work.
Update: A few peeps via the comments have confirmed that PSFreedom is indeed working.
Update: KaKaRoTo has released the PSFreedom source code.
Update: Apparently it works on a Nokia N800 and N810 using this method. Try it out, let us know.

LV2 Memory Dumper – LV2Dump v0.7a – Released

This’ll perhaps lead to something bigger and badder… From blackb0x comes a LV2 Memory Dumper app that’ll do just that — dump the PS3 LV2 memory to a file that can later be analyzed by all the hackers and aspiring jailbirds out there. It goes something like this: Install, dump, analyze, discover, exploit, email hacks at ps3-hacks with a dot com and crack a cold one. In other words, developers can further explore the inner-workings of the PS3, which could possibly lead to other exploits. Maybe.

This application will dump all accessible LV2 memory on a jailbroken retail PS3.
To run this app, place lv2dump_07a.pkg on a usb memory stick. Install the pkg. Then run LV2Dump from the XMB. It should run for approximately 20-30 seconds, then it will exit back to the XMB. There will now be a file named LV2.BIN in the folder /dev_hdd0/game/
You can access your dump by copying the file out with your own code, or the FTP application.
Before attempting another dump, delete the LV2.BIN that is in /dev_hdd0/game/ as the next dump will append to the file if it exists.
The dump is right around 8MB – which will let you take a look at the PS3′s kernel.
Expect more tools from us in the future for the PS3.

Thanks for the heads up, BLuFeNiX.

Play PS3 Backups from a DVD-R / BD-R

Jamal94 knows, and if you don’t, he’s gonna tell you: you can burn PS3 backups to a DVD-R or BD-R (dual-layer media doesn’t work) should the game fit. But now you’re probably wondering, why would I want to do that, Jamal? I got a 500+ GB drive for backing up games. Well take a look here and you’ll notice more than a few games have issues. Reports are coming in that games with problems *may* see improved compatibility when playing from an optical disc. It’s simple really:
  1. Backup your [legitimately owned] game to the HDD using Backup Manager.
  2. If you’ve backed up to an external FAT32 formatted drive:
    • Connect the drive to your PC and browse to X:\GAMEZ\
  3. If you’ve backed up to the internal HDD:
    • Connect to your PS3 with PS3 FTP Server
    • Browse to /dev_hdd0/game/LAUN12345/GAMEZ/
  4. You should see 2 directories: PS3_GAME & PS3_UPDATE — and 1 file: PS3_DISC.sfb
  5. Burn those 2 directories and 1 file to a single layer DVD-R or BD-R.
  6. Delete the game off your HDD.
  7. JailBreak your PS3, insert the disc, load Backup Manager and load your game.
  8. Store your original game disc for safekeeping.

Hack with Dashhacks: PS3 Break Giveaway

In light of our new found relationship with mygamingmart.com we’re going to give away one of these bad boys:
PS3 Break
It’s been tested; I can personally confirm PS3 Break works. The device is upgradable too, which means whenever an update happens you can make use of it. For example, lets say the ability to hack an earlier firmware version, or dare I say a later version is made possible. Well if the hack stems from the same USB trickery then you could update this stick to do just that.
Anyway, one lucky reader is going to get that same PS3 Break pictured above, courtesy of mygamingmart.com.
Now I understand our demographic is mostly male, so to all the guys out there wanting to hack their PS3, you better hope you know some hotties too. I’m talking Ice-T’s Coco hot. If you’re a girl reading this and looking to hack her PS3, first let me apologize for sounding sexist, but really, it’s even easier for you. That said, all you gotta do is this: Take a picture of whoever — your girlfriend, your mom, yourself (if you’re female) — sporting the Dashhacks logo or ps3-hacks.com in some fashion and twitpic that pic to @dashhacks on Twitter. Our one & only female Dashhacks correspondent will be picking the winner. Good luck.
Didn’t win? Want to buy one anyway? mygamingmart.com has stock! Real quick — click here to order one for $59.95 CAD.
